Acoustic simulation

With the finite element method or FEM one has a very powerful method to investigate the characteristics of sound in a room or environment. Acoustic simulation is recognised nowadays as predictive and is able to modify the model easily and effectively to improve the model. With Finite Element Analysis (FEA) two dimensional as well as three dimensional models can be made of the sound field, and if required also the absorption of panels can be investigated. A few projects which have been done are listed here.

The figures above are a few impressions of sound related projects of Physixfactor.

  • Investigation of the positioning and properties on the sound field in a loudspeaker to reveal resonating panels.
  • Analysis of the influence of the position of production machinery in a large hall.
  • Acoustics of a muffler for a new exhaust pipe for motor cycles.
  • Acoustical sound field in water, near a local harbour.

The application of FEM in this field requires in general a considerable amount of CPU power. This is mainly due to the properties of sound, related to the wavelength and the scale of the problem. The wavelength of the sound is a characteristic which should be taken into account if one requires a well enough resolution (in other words a high enough accuracy). For these reasons Physixfactor is equipped with fast workstations with at least 12 cores and over 64 Gb of memory, and uses the most efficient and modern solvers.
